ABOUT SERGE FATTAL
Serge Fatal is a Syrian Armenian composer and pianist who draws on both cultural backgrounds as the foundation of his music. His early works explore Armenian and Arabic modal traditions, enriched with elements of contemporary classical language. To deepen his connection with Armenian heritage, he sang with a church choir, engaging with and gaining a deeper understanding of the tradition in its purest form. A notable collaboration was with Ardean Art Gallery, an institution known for reinterpreting ancient Armenian texts and manuscripts through modernistic expression. This partnership was reflected in the performance and video recording of his string quartet Daffodil, staged against a large-scale artwork depicting the 13th-century Armenian monastery of Gandzasar highlighting the shared approaches and resonances between different artistic traditions.
Serge has received international recognition for his compositions, including a nomination at the Marvin Hamlisch International Music Awards in the Classical Composition category for his work Piano Cello N2. He was also shortlisted in Creative Armenia’s Self-Quarantine Art Challenge for his piano piece Humdrum. Composed during the COVID-19 quarantine, Humdrum captures the repetitive and mundane routines of prolonged isolation and explores how such periods affect the human mind..
As a pianist, Serge performs with the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble at the University of Toronto, presenting works by a wide range of contemporary composers. His performances reflect a deep engagement with both classical and modern repertoire, shaped by his parallel journey as a composer. He has appeared at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto presenting his Fantasia for Piano Cello and Cafesjian Center for the Arts in Yerevan, showcasing his own music alongside works by other composers. In addition, he has served as a piano accompanist for voice students at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan and for a choir at the Naregatsi Art Institute.
